Why do bed bugs come back after treatment?

A heat treatment treats the space we heat. Bed bugs that are somewhere else, like a car, a patio, a bag or a person, are not part of that treatment. These are real situations we’ve seen (details kept anonymous):

  • The untreated car. A customer declined treatment for their car. The bed bugs riding in the car came right back into the home.
  • The bug on an arm. We once saw a bed bug crawling on a person’s arm as they were leaving. People can carry bed bugs out of one place and into another.
  • The child’s shoes. A child at a hospital had to have their clothes removed because bed bugs were found in their shoes.
  • The patio chairs. A family followed every instruction, but bed bugs later turned up on their patio chairs and shoes, which hadn’t been treated.

What should I do right after treatment?

  • Follow the re-entry guidance your technician gives you. Rooms need time to cool down.
  • Bring back only items that were treated, laundered on high heat or kept sealed.
  • Don’t throw out bedding or furniture just because you had bed bugs. Ask us first. Badly saturated pieces are sometimes better replaced, and we’ll talk that through with you.

How do I prevent bed bugs from being brought back?

  • Include cars and outdoor furniture if they were used while bed bugs were active.
  • Check shoes, backpacks and bags, especially after hospital visits, travel, sleepovers or shelters.
  • Travel smart. Keep luggage off hotel beds and floors, and check seams before you unpack at home.
  • Be careful with secondhand furniture. See how to check used furniture for bed bugs.
  • Mattress encasements make future checks easier, because there are fewer seams for bed bugs to hide in.

What if I live in an apartment?

Shared walls and hallways add risk. Whether other units should be inspected is a decision for the property owner or manager. We coordinate with property contacts on apartment and multi-unit treatments.

What signs mean bed bugs are back?

Look for live bugs, dark fecal spots on seams, shed skins, tiny blood spots on sheets or a musty, sweet odor. New bites alone aren’t proof, because people react very differently. If you see signs, call early. A small problem is far easier to deal with than a spread-out one. More in our FAQ on why bed bugs come back.

After-treatment FAQs

01Can bed bugs come back after heat treatment?+

Yes, usually because they are carried back in on cars, shoes, bags, outdoor furniture or people. That’s why we plan around those risks and don’t offer guarantees.

02Should I throw away my mattress after bed bugs?+

Not automatically. Heat treats mattresses in place. Heavily saturated items are sometimes better replaced, and we’ll discuss that with you directly.

03Do I need to treat my car for bed bugs?+

If the car was used while bed bugs were active, it can carry them back into the home. Ask us about including it.
