Where do flea bites and bed bug bites usually appear?
- Fleas jump up from floors, rugs and pets, so bites are usually around the ankles, lower legs and the backs of the knees.
- Bed bugs crawl onto a resting person, so bites usually show up on whatever skin was exposed during sleep: arms, shoulders, neck and face. They’re sometimes in a line or small cluster.
Why can’t bites prove bed bugs?
People react very differently. Some get noticeable welts, some get mild bumps a day or more later, and some show no marks at all. Mosquitoes, fleas, mites and skin conditions can look similar. If bites are severe, keep spreading, or look infected, see a doctor.
What are the real signs of bed bugs?
- Live bugs: flat, oval, reddish-brown, about the size of an apple seed as adults.
- Dark fecal spots on mattress seams, sheets and furniture, like dots from a fine-tip marker.
- Shed skins and tiny pearly-white eggs in seams and crevices.
- Small blood spots on sheets.
- A musty, sweet odor in heavier infestations.

What should I do if it’s bed bugs?
Don’t use foggers or move bedding to other rooms, because both can spread the problem. Call for a professional assessment. We treat bed bugs with heat only. Read how bed bug heat treatment works or find your city.
